24 foot wide refrigerated shipping container? Yes you're reading the headline right, it is a custom built 24 foot wide refrigerated shipping container that was setup at a local customers location over a week ago.
This 24ft wide refrigerated shipping container is actually not the first or the largest that we setup so far. A few months back we setup two 40ft wide refrigerated storage shipping container for another local pet food supplier.
The pet food supplier 40 foot wide refrigerated shipping container was put together inside the customers warehouse which was something else.
Yes there was more than enough space but there was no entrance in the back of the warehouse.
As much as the customer was friendly as much as he could not wait for us to get done and get out, so he can enjoy the vast refrigerated storage space.
Before the customer got this 24' wide refrigerated shipping container on location he used a 53' reefer trailer for his cold storage space.
Don't get me wrong now. There is nothing wrong with the 53' reefer used as cold storage space. But in this customers circumstances yes there are some disadvantages like.
It took up less than two days to complete this 24' wide refrigerated shipping container that's including the delivery of the three reefers units one at a time.
By the time we made it to the customers location the first refrigerated container was already on site in place just need a little alignment and installing the steel base brackets.
The bottom steel brackets were designed to take two container corner caps to create some kind of interlocking and help line up the containers side by side.
There are no fasteners for the bottom brackets. The weigh of the containers is what keeps them in place. We just lift the container and set it on the brackets.
The top brackets on the other hand do the same function by interlocking the containers with one exception, they set on the top corner caps and take two bolts to keep them attached to the refrigerated containers
A center steel post is bolted to the floor and the ceiling to keep the roof from caving down while the refrigerated containers been transported to location. These steel posts get removed by the time the container interlock with the next one to it.
Before the first two container get interlocked. A two inch thick self adhesive foam is installed on the vertical side posts this way when the containers interlock the foam strips will firmly seal the vertical gap. Same thing goes on the third container too.
The outside gap ( The gap between the door frames ) get a custom design rubber seal in a shape of the letter ( T ) with about 4 inches flange that get pounded in place to prevent air and water from reaching the insulation foam sealant layer.
At this point of assembling the 24 foot wide refrigerated shipping container the three set cold storage container is interlocked and ready to be sealed.
The weather was freezing cold and we were debating on sealing the roof gaps in the cold or start finishing the inside were it was not as bad as outside.
The next day weather forecast calls for freezing cold and snow. Which end our debate. The roof has to be taking care of first since it was cold but dry.
Before we start foaming the gap from the top the ceiling gap from inside had to be fitted with the custom design rubber seal.
By the time that was taking care of. We start spray foaming the gap from the top (Roof), let the foam set for some time then add the rubber seal to cover the foam layer.
To protect the rubber seal we installed a light weigh treated steel cap on top of the rubber seal and seal the cap too.
Just like the ceiling and the roof gap. The floor gap got a full length of custom design rubber seal that got pounded in place to fill the cap.
On the top of the rubber seal a custom designed thick fiberglass composite stripes were installed to compensate for the depth of the floor cap. To basically level the floor and make it flush between the containers.
On the top of the fiberglass composite stripes a polished diamond aluminum plate strips were installed to finally bring the floor to flush. All the fasteners were countersunk for a perfect smooth finish.
The full length of this floor gap covering was sealed too, to prevent any cold air from escaping to the outside at the same time stopping the moist air from getting inside which can case a lot of icing problems..
By the time that was taking care of. We start spray foaming the gap from the top (Roof), let the foam set for some time then add the rubber seal to cover the foam layer.
The aluminum floor in this 24 foot wide refrigerated shipping container is slightly grooved lengthwise for better cold air circulation.
As mentioned before the ceiling rubber seal was the first to get installed. Over the rubber seal comes the polished aluminum cap that get a sealant double face tape and fastened to the top rails of both containers.
The cap get a light bead of white silicon sealant all the way around the edges as the last layer of protection of air leaking in or out this 24 foot wide refrigerated shipping container.
The inside vertical gap between the door frames get the same treatment. Double face tape, fasteners, light bead of white silicon sealant all the way around.
Inside lighting cables get connected between the container. Some cleaning up and the 24 foot wide refrigerated shipping container is ready to be powered up and put in use.
Was hoping to add some images of the 40 foot wide refrigerated shipping container that we set up for the local pet food supplier.
Unfortunately this setup was in a rush, and while the total focus was on geting the job done as fast as possible to keep the customers happy we forgot to take a minute to take some good photos of this really nice 40 foot by 40 foot wide refrigerated storage container.
